Impact Measurement With Your Teammates Just Got Easier and More Secure

Updated: Apr 7

When designing a product, it’s so easy to get caught up in trying to figure out what the next hot feature is going to be—THE one that you think will start making your product fly off the shelves—but sometimes it’s best to pause, breathe, and go back to basics. Is there something about the existing product or experience that you hypothesize, if tweaked, could increase interest, conversion, and/or user satisfaction?

That said, we have taken the time to step back and adjust our registration process to be more streamlined, more secure (two-factor authentication #ftw), and more engaging. If you’re new to b.world, register to experience what we’re talking about. Already have a b.world account? Invite someone to your b.world team to experience our new and improved registration process.

Happy exploring, happy learning, and here's to new beginnings!

Two-factor Authentication for better impact measurement protection

An email with a 6-digit verification code is sent to the registrant’s inbox; impact measurement with upgraded security

Given the sensitivity of the information that users may be entering into b.world—and because it’s a SaaS best practice—we’ve implemented two-factor authentication (2FA) as part of the registration process. Sound fancy? It’s very simple: you need to verify your identity using two different methods—in our case, your email address and a 6-digit verification code (sent to your email address). Down the line, you will also have the option to use your phone number instead of your email address as that second mode of verification. Many platforms also employ periodic 2FA as part of the login process to prevent unauthorized access. (We haven’t gotten there yet, but it’s on our roadmap!)

Moreover, in the former registration process, after entering your email address and creating a password b.world, you had to validate your email address by clicking a link sent to your inbox. While this is very similar to two-factor authentication from a workflow perspective, the difference with the updated process is that you stay in the SAME browser window during the registration process, creating a more streamlined experience and making it easier to resume if you must abandon mid-process.

‘Create a Team’ Now in the Driver’s Seat for a More Collaborative Impact Measurement Process

The key construct in b.world is the notion of a team. Your team includes all your projects, the contents therein, and your invited collaborators. Most people registering with b.world are creating a new team, not joining someone else’s existing b.world team. However, joining an existing team has always been the primary and more prominent action in b.world. Why? Because user interface (UI) design is always an evolving process and a learning experience. We’ve learned, we’ve analyzed, and we’ve made updates accordingly. We hope this (minor) change is as much a breath of fresh air for you as it is for us!

If you are joining an existing team, there’s a convenient link at the bottom of the page that toggles to the “Join” screen.

All key fields for creating a team are on one screen; ‘Create a Team’ is the primary action, and ‘Join a Team’ (link seen at the bottom) is secondary

Team Name URL Suggestions for a more cohesive Impact Measurement management

If you’re creating a new team when registering, you must enter your name and then make a team name and URL sub-domain name. Previously, this process was slightly painful—having all three of these steps on separate screens—and not so fun. However, our revamp removes the pain AND adds some fun. Now these three tasks are completed on one screen and—wait for it—as soon as you enter a team name, the Team URL field is auto-populated with your team name as the URL sub-domain, PLUS there are five additional team name suggestions. (That’s the fun part.)

Your Organization Details

As part of the upgraded registration process, we now ask a few basic questions about your organization—namely headquarters location, organization type and sector—which you can decide to answer while registering, or at a later time of your choice. Is this just us trying to be nosy? Of course not! First of all, we are always curious to know more about who you are and what you do. Moreover, knowing more about your organization (and you!) helps us craft better experiences, send more relevant communications and act as better partners to you and your colleagues. You can view and edit this information via the Team Details section at the top left of the Team Administration page.

Invite Your Impact Measurement Teammates to the Team

Previously, it wasn’t possible to invite teammates to join your team during registration; you had to create a team, complete registration, and then invite teammates from your b.world Team Administration page. While you can still invite teammates from that page post-registration, you can now invite teammates while registering yourself. This is a standard step in the registration process for SaaS collaboration platforms (think Slack), and we’re proud to introduce it to b.world.

Registrants can now invite others to join their team during the registration process

With this only being our second release of the year, there’s a lot more to come. Stay tuned for upcoming releases that:

  • Improve b.world stories 📖

  • Simplify getting indicator data into b.world 👊

  • Keep b.world aligned to the latest version of the Common Impact Data Standard (SFIs and SPOs in Canada: we’re talking to you!) 🙌

And, as always, we love to hear feedback—the good, the bad, and the ugly—from our users about our platform. We adhere to a user-centered design mindset, so the more we learn from our users, the more we can ensure that b.world aligns with your current needs and desires, and even the future of project design, impact measurement, and storytelling that has yet to be imagined.
